Experimental Art in Haebangchon

sangheeut began in 2021 near the Haebangchon Five-way Intersection as a space for exhibitions that challenged conventional ways of presenting and viewing art.

The gallery has since relocated to the entrance of Haebangchon near Gyeongridan-gil, while continuing to support experimental and curator-led projects.

For visitors interested in Seoul’s independent art scene, this makes it very different from a large commercial gallery or museum.

Emerging and Mid-Career Artists

The gallery presents both solo and group exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists.

Rather than focusing only on established names, sangheeut acts as an incubating platform where artists can test new ideas, media and exhibition formats.

Visitors may encounter painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance or other time-based work depending on the exhibition.

More Than a White-Cube Gallery

sangheeut has organized performance-based exhibitions, screening programs and other projects that move beyond conventional wall-based displays.

This gives each exhibition a different spatial and conceptual character.

The compact, semi-basement setting can also make the viewing experience feel more intimate and immersive.

A Cultural Stop in Haebangchon

Haebangchon is best known for its cafés, restaurants and hillside streets, but smaller cultural spaces are part of the neighborhood as well.

A visit to sangheeut can be easily combined with a walk through Haebangchon, Gyeongridan-gil or Noksapyeong.
